A new high-speed broadband network will enable Leicester City Council to offer improved services, it has claimed.
The new connection, which operates at speeds of ten Megabits per second (Mbps), connects the council headquarters to 150 satellite offices and is designed to enable the authority to offer higher levels of service.
Provided by ntl:Telewest Business, it is also hoped that the Ethernet-based virtual private network can improve the working conditions for council employees.
Peter Kay, the Infrastructure Manager at Leicester City Council, said that the old two-Mbps network was no longer fit for the purposes of an evolving council.
"The revenue cost of our new ten-Mbps network is significantly cheaper, meaning public money can be put to better use and within four years we expect our investment to be paid back," he added.
Leicester City Council employs more than 15,000 staff and notes that its services must be provided to a diverse range of individuals in the largest city in the east Midlands.
