Sun Microsystems, the company behind the development of the widely-used Java programming language, has said it has achieved a major accessibility landmark with a new variant of the code.

Announcing the launch of JavaFX, Sun says the new Java language will enable consumers to access the Internet from virtually any mobile device in future.

Rich Green, Executive Vice President of Sun Microsystems, revealed that the new language is a "major step" towards the full expansion of the Internet onto mobile devices.

Emphasising the importance of JavaFX, the Director of the United Nations New York Office of Sport for Development and Peace, Dr Djibril Diallo, told the JavaOne conference: "Bringing the Internet to people through mobile handsets can greatly expand access, and it is imperative that the technology industry continues to innovate to make that a reality worldwide."

He added that the real challenge is making new Internet-based technologies available in the developing world.

Previously, full access to the Internet through mobile devices had been limited to technologies such as WAP and similar simple data services.
