The UK's sector skills council for IT and telecoms, e-Skills UK, is hopeful for the new Diploma in IT for 14 to 19-year-olds.

Commenting in the wake of a recent report from the education and skills committee, e-Skills UK applauded the findings that colleges, schools and employers must be encouraged to provide support for the new qualification.

Karen Price, the body's Chief Executive Officer, stated her belief that effective work must be carried out to match the "ambitious and challenging" implementation of the diploma.

"We believe that the introduction of the Diploma in IT provides a valuable opportunity to reform and revitalise IT education for young people," she commented.

The organisation cites Andy Hill of UK telecoms giant Vodafone, one of the employers on board to support the Diploma in IT's rollout, who stated that it is vital for young UK residents to learn IT skills for businesses to remain competitive in an increasingly knowledge-based global marketplace.
