A large proportion of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) remain unaware of Web 2.0, a new report shows.

The survey by content management solution provider Mediasurface found that four in ten smaller businesses have no knowledge of the widely publicised concept.

Meanwhile, of the businesses who are aware of Web 2.0, four in ten believe it will not impact on their business.

Andy Peart, Mediasurface Chief Marketing Officer, described the findings as "interesting" and suggested the message of Web 2.0 might not reach SMEs in the same way it does larger corporations.

However, he added: "There is still a great opportunity to show SMEs the true value of effectively managed web content and to illustrate that Web 2.0 is all about using the power of the web for business advantage."

It has been suggested that the evolution of Web 2.0 could have serious repercussions for website accessibility, as it would require assistive technology to be developed at a similar rate.

AbilityNet Head of Accessibility Services Robin Christopherson warned that while Web 2.0 would not "close the door" of accessibility, it will create more potential pitfalls for those attempting to create accessible websites.
