The London Borough of Tower Hamlets Council has won praise for its website.

Along with the one-stop-shops which the local authority offers, the portal played a major role in securing it Charter Mark status, the government's recognition of excellence in public service provision.

The site enables residents to search for jobs, find out about a range of events, read news about their area and conduct a number if services including bill payment and reporting crimes.

Pat Horgan, the council's One-Stop-Shop Service Manager, commented: "Working towards Charter Mark made us look hard at our service ... we found that our customers want choice, quality and efficiency and we'll continue to improve the support we provide for local people."

The Charter Mark assessment was conducted by SGS, which examined the website and various documents as well as visiting the one-stop-shops to check service levels and interview employees and customers.
