Councils are achieving a high public uptake for a range of Internet-based services, a new report shows.

As a result, they are saving the tax payer large sums of money each year, the Socitm Insight report, entitled 'Better marketed: achieving success with online services', reveals.

In Leicester, for example, more than £1 million is now being saved every year thanks to 85 per cent of its online recruitment taking place online.

The report includes a series of case studies from councils with a high take-up of a range of e-services.

It also explains the potential to convert council service users to the web.

Writing in the foreword to the report, Sir Chris Clarke, formerly Leader of Somerset CC and Deputy Chair of the Local Government Association, commented: "The more enlightened [councils] are showing that with ingenuity and persistence, web use in the public sector can reach the same levels as other sites.

"Figures in this report show that Internet use at home in Britain covers two thirds of the population," he added, quoted by eGov monitor.
