MPs' websites are to be judged on accessibility in a new competition.

The British Computer Society (BCS) is looking to give recognition to MPs who it believes have best used their websites to communicate their political platform.

Its MP Website Awards will judge available MP websites on accessibility, usability and engagement, with judges on the lookout for sites that present the world of politics in an exciting and dynamic manner - particularly to young people.

BCS Chief Executive David Clarke said: "Today's computer technology enables ministers and MPs to engage with constituents and voters in a two-way dialogue that enhances the democratic process.

"If used creatively, and with IT processes that are familiar to young people, it will also attract and persuade more of them to take a keener interest in the political process which is surely vital for the safeguard of our democracy," she added.

Initial appraisal will take place in June, a shortlist drawn up and winners, including an overall winner, announced in October.
