In collaboration with the BBC, Microsoft has developed a new online three-dimensional photographic experience enabling web users to access pictures of some of Britain's most recognisable buildings.

Using the firm's Photosynth technology, the service – run in conjunction with the BBC's How We Built Britain programme – allows users to explore a building by zooming in and out, and panning through 360 degree images.

Adam Sheppard, Group Product Manager at Microsoft Live Labs, said that the technology enables people to take in "minute details" within a 3D environment.

"This opportunity with the BBC allowed us to test the limits of the Photsynth technology by integrating photographs from decades ago of the United Kingdom's historic sites, along with those of the general public today," he remarked.

How We Built Britain looks to explore a thousand years of British history by taking a tour of the country's most distinctive buildings.
