A new survey has revealed which government services Britons would most like to be able to access online.

The poll by Directgov found that the most desired services included truancy alerts in the event that a child does not attend school, virtual college and university tours, and guides to services for older people.

Other wished-for services included the ability to renew car tax over the Internet and personalised journey planners specifically for disabled people.

Directgov said that the study showed an underlying trend of people wanting to stay connected and save time and money.

"With two-thirds of our sample saying that the Internet is invaluable in helping them to manage their lives, this project helps us to understand what information people want and scope to [plan] out the future of online services," commented Jayne Nickalls, Chief Executive Officer of Directgov.

Last month, Rose Crozier of the Society of Information Technology Management told IT week that local authorities have "forged ahead" in terms of the provision of e-government services.
