A drop in eBay listings of 6% since last year and a stagnating number of users means corrective action needs to be taken in order to recover from this. The first quarter of the year saw profits up 50% however in the second quarter these new figures indicate eBay’s struggle to draw and maintain new customers. The answer is to improve the users’ experience of the website.

Meg Whitman, chief executive of eBay says:

In the next six months, you will see more changes to eBay than you have in the last two or three years, whether that is an improved search experience or fun things that make the site better, like Bid Assistant, which allows you to bid on more than one item without worrying that you will end up buying five iPods by mistake.

Investment in usability services is key to addressing existing problems, along with Meg’s vow to commission a new web design for the homepage and become more aggressive in combating fraud on the site.
