Trinity Mirror has launched the first stage of its online overhaul by re-developing the websites for the local newspapers The Liverpool Daily Post and Liverpool Echo.

In just the first phase of a plan to update several of the companies regional sites over the coming months, the two new sites are to include a ‘most popular stories’ panel and user comments for the first time, while forum, video and audio areas of the sites have been given a makeover.

The company has also been running workshops in multimedia and online video for its journalists. The training includes a series of week-long video journalism courses and a series of one-day multimedia workshops. More than 70 journalists in the group's North West region attended the workshops, which will now be rolled out across the regional division

David Black, Trinity Mirror's director of regional digital media, said: "We are now well on our way to achieving our goal of publishing the leading sites in our local markets, complementing the strength of our market-leading print titles.
