Amazon has announced that it is to launch a new payment system for e-tailers, rivaling PayPal and Google Checkout.
The new system, dubbed Amazon Flexible Payment Service (FPS), forms part of the e-tailer’s Web Services programme and allows firms to create checkout facilities with a set of developer tools.
For each transaction processed Amazon will take a fee, the size of which depending on how payments are made.
Amazon said:
In much the same way that S3 and EC2 allow developers to forget about leasing space in data centers, buying servers and negotiating for bandwidth, FPS shields developers from many of the messy and complex issues which arise when dealing with money.
