The Home Office has praised West Yorkshire Police Authority's innovative website www.beatcrime.info as a model for the rest of the country.
The Authority, which oversees policing on behalf of the public, developed the website that enables users to enter their postcode and then look at where crime has happened during the last month on their local police beat.
The Government’s new Crime Strategy was unveiled recently
to make crime data available on a monthly and consistent basis to people throughout the country at a level that makes sense to them locally.

Following this Catherine Archer, Chief Executive of the Police Authority stated:
The Beatcrime website already provides everything that the Home Office wants to see in place......As well as keeping people informed of what crime is happening in their area, www.beatcrime.info also provides information on how people can stop themselves becoming victims of crime.

The information on the website is updated in the middle of every month. Those without Internet access at work or in the home can gain free access in the majority of local libraries.
