With more and more importance placed on search engine optimisation, getting the balance right of how many links to your website is crucial.
Too many dubious references within your website can cause Google to give you the boot. However, links are still powerful and can create the beginning of a reciprocal link network, with the ethos of 'link to me and I'll link to you'. The question remains though: how many links is too many?
Many believe that reciprocal links are bad news, however, this is not always the case as many reciprocal links are legitimate and can be extremely to your website content. The grey area comes when you start to examine Google’s policy regarding them, there has been many discussions and debates on this topic with no clear conclusion.
Bob Masa, a certified SEO expert, believes that the number of links is not importance, it is their quality and relevance that will put you above others:
It is not about reciprocal links or how many is too many. It is about making more money from less visitors with less expense and more profit.
Don't let yourself get sucked into wasting your time judging linking opportunities with a yardstick of whether Google will think it is excessive or not. Approach each reciprocal link deal with a single thought. Will this link exchange bring me enough paying customers that I can justify recommending to my visitors to go to his site instead of staying at mine?
