As of Monday Ofcom have removed the restrictions for using wireless technology.
The relaxation of restrictions means that users will no longer need to hold a licence to operate equipment using approved Ultra-Wideband (UWB).
Using UWB provides technological benefits such as rapid transfer of data (up to two gigabits per second) over distances of about 30 metres as well as practical benefits as using UWB reduces the amount of cables there are in places of work and homes. Furthermore due to the speed of which is operates and low power utilisation, UWB poses as an alternative to technologies such as Bluetooth.
However critics say that the technology does have its downfalls. UWB can only be used over short distances and although there is the potential to travel further whilst using it, the signal does not penetrate walls.
