Voicing his opinion on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Vint Cerf said that the Internet should not be the scapegoat for negative behaviour in society. This comes following the Conservative Party pondering over ideas to limit access by young people to websites like YouTube and therefore their exposure to extreme and unpleasant violence.

Rather than regulating all the content available on the net, Cerf’s opinion lies much more in the thought that the Internet is a reflection of society itself and demonstrates freedom of expression, providing the material is not illegal. Perhaps a solution may be to filter Google search results by restricting to strict or lax depending on the user.

Cerf comments:

Most of the content on the network is contributed by the users of the Internet, so what we're seeing on the net is a reflection of the society we live in. Maybe it is important for us to look at that society and try to do something about what's happening, what we are seeing.
