A recent National Statistics Omnibus Survey with 1200 adults in Great Britain and 400 adults in Northern Ireland show that since August 2006 the number of UK households with Internet access has increased by almost one million.
Areas with the highest percentage of Internet access at 69% are London and south-west England and out of the UK’s 15.2 million web-enabled homes, 84% are now equipped with broadband connectivity. Results also demonstrated there is a strong relationship between age and Internet shopping where only 4% young people between 16-24 claim never to have used it, compared to 71% over the over 65’s.
There has been a 10% increase in online shopping since 2006 which means web accessibility and usability is due to raise their profile once again. The results also showed that users need to take threats to online security more seriously by taking out virus protection and regular full back ups of their computer files.
