Yahoo! has this week been accused of being part of human rights abuses in China. A US court has heard that according to reports they are being accused of sharing of information with the Chinese government.

It is reported that the World Organisation for Human Rights is suing Yahoo! after claims that Yahoo! provided information to the Chinese government. Resulting from this provision of information has been the arrest and imprisonment of Chinese journalists and government critics.

In response to this claim, Yahoo! have said that they must comply with countries’ local laws in which it operates, and that as an organisation it supports free speech. Yahoo! did admit that the information they gave to the Chinese government has led to arrests.

The organisation is not alone in being criticised with its implications to the Chinese government’s controls over the freedom of information available online. Google in recent months admitted to limiting access to sites that may hold politically sensitive information.
