According to consumer watchdog Which? free alternatives are just as good as, if not better than top of the range security products.

The report produced buy the consumer watchdog found that the free alternatives to popular security products such as Norton Anti-Virus and Mcfee VirusScan perform just as well and are just as easy to use.

The licence to use security software has to be renewed once a year and normally costs around £30 to £50 depending on the brand.

The report however did conclude that there is one drawback; users may have to dedicate time to looking for the customer support services for the free anti-virus and firewall programs. In some cases the updates would have to be downloaded manually.

Abigail Smith, head of research at the Computing Which? magazine commented:

If you're reasonably confident with your computer and are happy to look for support in places like forums, then free security software is a good way to go, and certainly saves a lot of money.
