Regional newspapers are increasingly going online with their own websites according to a new survey.

The survey, carried out by the Newspaper Society, has revealed that the number of websites developed for regional newspapers has grown from 828 in 2005, to 1102 in 2006, a growth of 25 percent. It is estimated that currently around 40 million people read a printed local daily paper.

Newspaper Society president Russell Whitehair said:

Growth in local newspaper websites means they now collectively represent one of the top UK online properties, attracting an estimated 20m unique users a month - which would put it above the BBC, alongside Yahoo! and within striking distance of Ebay, MSN and Google.
