Media consultancy Elemental has launched an online tool that maps social media networks and the landscapes they create from around the globe. The Social Media Portal (SMP) is being introduced at ad:tech London during September 2007.

Designed and developed by Australian-based web agency C2, SMP encompasses the role of social networks, user generated content (UGC), blogs, podcasts, search engines and other technology like instant messenger.

SMP's Landscape will continue to grow on a daily basis, as social media companies and blog owners are encouraged to add their sites.

Rachel Hawkes, account director at Elemental, who led the development of the SMP, said:

For users, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find a site that appeals to their own individual style and/or interests and possibly will result in more vertical sites being created. SMP meets these very different needs in a way that is visually interesting and educational.

Tim Gibbon, director at Elemental comments,

SMP demonstrates how social networks aren't the new kid on the block, and in fact has been a part of our culture a lot longer than is thought. It highlights the relationships between organisations, business and people within the Landscape and how they intertwine and connect with each other using social media.

Marketers and brand owners want to know where online audiences are and how to interact with them on their own level, and social media sites may be interested in bringing in elements like advertising and promotions that suit their users better.
