Last week saw UK newspaper websites reach their highest levels of traffic in the last two years, a result of a number of big news stories according to Hitwise.
Stories reporting about the pending credit crunch and the rogue trader boosted hits within the business section of the web, and were a major contributor to the rise in traffic to newspaper sites. UK Internet searches for the term ‘FTSE’ increased by 223% last week.
Robin Goad, Director of Research at Hitwise commented:
The fact that we saw searches for ‘financial news’ double last week proves that people in the UK are clearly concerned about the economy.

Later in the week Jerome Kerviel, a trader at Societe Generale, lost the French bank an astounding £3.7 billion. As a result, search terms for ‘societe generale’ quadrupled, and traffic to the Financial Times website increased by 18%.
