The cruise community website, www.cruise.co.uk, has snapped up their domain name for a whopping £560,000 – a UK record.

The domain has been purchased by German travel company Nees Reisen, and the price that was paid massively overtakes the previous record set for a domain purchase which was £150,000 for recycle.co.uk in October 2007.

The cruise website claims 18,000 active contributors and the owners of cruise.co.uk will become its new platform for online social networking, with the aim of creating a community with user-generated content that meets the demand of this expanding sector.

Managing Director of Cruises.co.uk, Seamus Conlon comments:

The purchase of the plural domain name of its site demonstrated how serious the business was about retaining its number one position in a fast-growing sector. ‘Cruises’ is consistently ranked first on Google, with ‘cruise’ just behind. We wanted the top positions so that when Internet users are searching for cruise deals, reviews or news we are the first port of call.
