An assessment of the most popular social websites in the UK has identified that there has been a shake up in the top ten.

YouTube remains the key player, maintaining its position as number one for the 7th consecutive month, according to the research conducted by Nielsen Online.

Facebook comes in 2nd, as the only social website to receive over ten million unique visitors in a single month. YouTube achieved this in November 2007.

Compared against April’s results, there are two new entrants; Slide and Wordpress. These new entrants have come at a cost at Google Video (dropping from 8th to 20th position) and Friends Reunited (sliding from 10th to 14th).

Alex Burmaster, European Internet Analyst, Nielsen Online, said:

Although social media is the undoubted web phenomenon of the moment, the leading players cannot afford to rest on their laurels. The space remains extremely competitive and the most popular sites have experienced contrasting fortunes over the last year and the last quarter.

Social media consumers are 'the fast and the curious', always looking for, and moving to, the next social media service that can meet the need to organise and showcase their lives and interests more effectively.

The top ten includes:

  1. YouTube
  2. Facebook
  3. Wikipedia
  4. Blogger
  5. MySpace
  6. Bebo
  7. Yahoo! Answers
  8. Slide
  9. Windows Live Spaces
  10. Wordpress
