United Nations global audit of web accessibility report now available
The United Nations Department of Social and Economic Affairs commissioned Nomensa to conduct this audit to determine how accessible the Internet is for persons with disabilities. The full report is now available to all in electronic format.
The report, which has been only available as an Executive Summary since it was released on 5th December 2006, reveals that 97% of websites tested fail to achieve the minimum web accessibility level.
Using a combination of manual and automated testing against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), Nomensa examined the leading website in five different sectors in 20 countries, including its Head of State and leading airline, bank, newspaper and retailer.
Simon Norris, managing director of Nomensa comments:
As the first ever global audit of web accessibility it presents a unique global perspective in terms of website accessibility.
The report reveals that website owners and designers need to do a lot more to ensure an equal level of user experience for everybody. Web accessibility needs to be taken much more seriously if organisations are committed to delivering online excellence for everyone.
