Card Sorting

Cards laid out respresenting a website's structureCard sorting involves representative members of your online audience placing your online content into groupings that make sense to them. This helps us to see the common patterns and provides great insight into how your audience approaches your content and what they expect.

Asking people to suggest labels for their groupings gives us a great headstart on creating your navigation. By seeing the types of words that people naturally use, we can ensure that we create labels in your navigation that reflect these and that will therefore be meaningful and intuitive to your audience.

Card sorting can be especially useful for e-commerce retail sites. Understanding how your customers naturally group and label your products can help you to create a product catalogue that really works.

You should consider card sorting if:

  • You are creating a new site and need to develop a navigation structure.
  • You are redeveloping the navigation or product catalogue on your site.
