Working at Nomensa
Since our founding in 2001, Nomensa has grown into an internationally renowned user experience (UX) agency with a reputation for exceptional thinking and design delivery.
We have over 100 people spread across our Bristol, London and Amsterdam offices, making us one of Europe’s largest specialist UX agencies. Our pioneering team is united by one goal: to deliver experience excellence for all our customers.
We structure our strategies around real emotions and behaviours. We do this by capitalising on our cutting-edge research capabilities and in-house labs. The insights garnered through user testing inform our creations, resulting in datadriven designs that our developers bring to life.
We centralise humans in everything we do and generate incredible digital experiences that millions of people interact with every day.
Our clients include:
‘We work with such a diverse range of clients and sectors, that there are always different opportunities and challenges that come up. You’re always kept on your feet!’
Pete Kennaugh-Gallagher, Principal UX Consultant
We are brave. We never look to accept things just for what they are. It’s about defining what they could and should be.
Being bold leads us to new creative territories. It frees our thoughts and allows us to imagine further than the present. In being bold and courageous, we ask ‘how far can we take this’?
We are human-centric. Understanding why people think and behave as they do is present in everything we do. We firmly believe in designing for everyone and won’t deliver something that doesn’t stand up to that belief.
Equally, we partner with our clients and work collaboratively to drive value and create passion as part of our working culture. Inclusivity, a passion for what we do and making a measurable difference are all central to our mission to humanise technology.
Knowledge underpins our expertise. It’s what stimulates us to learn more and motivates us to share what we learn with both clients and our peers. It’s a celebrated part of our heritage.
Equally, our strong use of research allows us to see the bigger picture and ensure that we are rigorous with it. But we don’t stop there. We combine insight, expertise and innovation in a way that enables us to think bigger.
‘It’s great being surrounded by such talented people that all have really different skills that they bring to the table. One thing I really like is that Nomensa always encourage and push you to use your skills that are outside of the typical UX design role.’
Ellis, Senior UX Designer
We know companies always say it, but our team truly is chock-full of brilliant, passionate and imaginative minds. Each of us sees the world from an inimitable and invaluable perspective, and it’s these unique experiences, traits and skills that form the foundations for our strategies. Plus, we spend most of our lives working – so, why not enjoy it? We love to have fun and laugh with each other.
‘None of us are afraid of something new. I suppose it’s because Nomensans are such a supportive bunch of people. I know I have a support network, people who want me to succeed and most importantly want me to be happy on a daily basis.’
Imogen, Studio Admin
The wellbeing of our people is paramount and being human is at the core of what we do. So we also recognise that sometimes things aren’t as plain sailing as we would like to them to be and have a range of support in place for our people. From Cashplan schemes for everyday health expenses, employee assistance programmes to include access to 24/7 advice or structured counselling where required and access to online health portals and a mindfulness app.
We also have 16 trained mental health first aiders (our wellbeing officers) who are on hand to provide support and advice when needed. That’s around 1 wellbeing officer to every 6 employees so there is always someone on hand when you need it. Include wellbeing officer’s logo once approved.
We like to regularly celebrate each other too, with weekly shoutouts via our let’s recognize scheme, days of for our birthdays (and birthdays goodie boxes!) and annual company awards with categories such as ‘NomenSTAR’ and ‘Think Bigger: Ideas, Creativity Innovation’.
Supporting emerging talent
Over the years we’ve welcomed several graduates, apprentices and work experience placements who’ve gone on to further their careers with us. But don’t just take our word for it. Tom joined us as a Psychology graduate in 2017 – read his blog post.
‘The exposure you get to different industries, clients and projects here is amazing, especially for someone starting their career from the bottom up. It’s great to be doing different things all the time. I’ve learnt so much over the years. Also, the people here are great – everyone is so supportive.’
Amber, Senior UX Consultant (who joined as part of our Graduate intake in 2017)
Providing flexible freelance opportunities
We work with contractors, consultants and freelancers on a range of fixed-term contracts for a variety of projects. If you can’t see a vacancy that quite matches what you’re looking for right now, submit your CV and we’ll be in touch when something arises.
Personal development is a priority
We’re committed to the continuous improvement of our company and its people. We admit there is a slightly selfish reason behind all this: we want to be the best. We only hire the most brilliant and brightest minds, but being the best and remaining the best are two very different things. If you’re eager to improve, then we want to give you the tools, training and agency to be the best version of yourself.
We champion career growth and don’t just want you to flourish – we actively take steps to make it happen. That’s one of the reasons why we’ve been awarded Gold from the Investors in People Standard for so many years running which is something only a few UK businesses can claim.
Just some of the ways we can support you in your career development:
- We work with a diverse and exciting range of clients across the public and private sector
- We use a dedicated platform called Clear Review to support your development through regular conversations and objectives setting.
- We have an internal recognition scheme that anyone can nominate/be nominated
- We’re a meritocracy – if you work hard, you will rise up
- We invest in both internal and external training
- We have an open plan office so that everyone – from the founders to line managers – are visible and around for guidance (or even Just a chat)
Plus, there are always opportunities to support our thought-leadership, whether you want to write a blog, host a webinar or speak at one of our amazing events.
We’re also keen to help Nomensans progress in their careers and regularly promote internally. We’re proud that even during challenging times of 2020, we were still able to promote 10% of our workforce and this streak is continuing into 2021.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Nomensa’s equality diversity & inclusion group are made up of volunteers from across the company who are passionate about creating an environment where all employees can bring their whole selves to work. We believe that inclusion is essential to delivering our best work and Nomensa are committed to recognizing where we can improve and taking action.
Accessibility and inclusion are at the heart of all we do. Here’s what Hannah, Head of Experience Delivery, had to say about a recent project we worked on with Girlguiding:
“We took our research out to the volunteers themselves, to their unit meetings, to see them in their element and better understand their experiences firsthand. It was brilliant to bring to life what these volunteers experience, how they can be better supported and guide a vision for inclusivity.”
How we’re adapting to COVID
When COVID hit in March 2020, we were quick to adapt our ways of working. We currently have our Bristol office open for those who wish to come in, but the majority of the team continue to work from home.
We’ve kept the #TeamNomensa spirit alive with regular updates from Sally - our MD - and Senior Leadership Team, weekly internal newsletter (covering everything from new wines to Netflix recommendations!), virtual get togethers, quizzes and games.
Occupying two colourful floors in Queens Square, our Bristol office features a bounty of meeting rooms, breakout spaces and enough whiteboard walls and Post-It notes to fit an army of UXers.
Our Amsterdam office, first opened in 2016, is close to the city’s famed, snaking canals and is surrounded by galleries, theatres and green spaces. While it’s smaller than the Bristol branch, it still every ounce Nomensan.
We opened our London office near Oxford Street back in 2013. The move represented our big ideas for the Big Smoke and acted as the first step of our European expansion plan.
